Happy National Zipper Day!

It was on April 29, 1913 that the first modern zipper was created, and though it is not the most exciting event of that era, it was definitely noteworthy. If you disagree, consider how often you use a zipper. Beginning as early as 1851, inventors had sought a way to close garments effectively, and though Elias Howe had the first design, it was not until 1906 that the “Universal Fastener Company also hired Gideon Sundback, a Swedish-American electrical engineer. He was highly skilled and known for his devotion to the company. On April 29, 1913, he was granted a patent for the modern zipper, known then as the ‘Separable Fastener.’”

B.F. Goodrich (of tire manufacturing fame) coined the term “zipper” when he used the design for pouches and boots his company manufactured. He even copyrighted it for a time.
