The Germ-Away Challenge: Week Four

Spring Clean Your Clothes

Spring cleaning season has finally arrived – the odd snowstorm, freezing weather, and a global pandemic aside – you can now feel free to fling open the windows, air out the house, and even tackle the closets.

In fact, one of the most overlooked parts of the entire spring-cleaning process is tackling the closets, drawers, and cupboards where clothing and household linens reside. It makes sense to conduct a seasonal purge of your wardrobe if only to make way for newer items, but spring is a great time to ensure you don’t have nasty surprises when cold weather rolls around at year’s end.

After all, whatever you might have on your winter coats, sweaters, heavier shirts and pants, and even your scarves and hats shouldn’t just sit there all spring, summer and fall. Those materials can lead to horrible odors, deep-set stains, and ruined garments. The oily food stain, the unknown blotch on the cuff of the coat, that weird smear of whatever on your pants…you don’t really want it sitting around fermenting, do you?

The easy answer is to air out, launder, and dry clean whenever necessary.

Wardrobe Upgrade

Don’t forget that it is also a chance to go through your summer wardrobe and find those pieces you won’t wear (and give them away) as well as locating items that might need repair or cleaning they didn’t get when put away in the fall.

Going through your summer wardrobe also ensures you didn’t miss any stains that might have turned a bit funky in the winter, and which require professional treatment to eliminate. Why ruin your first night out by discovering that your favorite outfit has a weird smell or stain you didn’t see when you last wore it?

If you want to dive into this week’s germ away challenge, we point you towards the closet. Not only will you enjoy the benefits above, but you can follow the expert advice at Closet America that guides you though the actual spring cleaning of the closets themselves; including airing them out, refreshing the shelf paper, and using both cleansers and sunlight to destroy germs.

And while you are at it, why not go the full distance and strip the windows of dusty and germ-filled curtains, swap out the furniture covers, and deep clean the bedding, too?
